3D laser scan of King Naresuan

We are honoured to 3D laser scan a 3.1 meter tall statue of King Naresuan. This sculpture is the base for many duplicate and derivative copies of other King Naresuan statues.

The Fine Arts Department (Thailand Ministry of Culture) is where this sculpture is located, and we were graciously given access to their sculpture hall. This sculpture hall is where they teach how to make sculptures from bronze casting processes.

To scan such a large statue, we used the Creaform Metra scanner with C-Track. This scanner is perfect for objects of this size, and can scan with 25-micron accuracy (1/1000 of an inch). The Creaform scanner is very fast with 7 laser lines. We are scanning this sculpture, as they want to make a large mould and make duplicate copies. The steps are:

1) We scan with the Creaform Metra/C-Track system, and using Creaform VXelements software.

2) The scan data is then further processed using Creaform VXelements software.

3) STL files are created and the data will be used the data to guide a large robotic arm, that will make a mould to duplicate this sculpture.

One of the challenges was the lack of any scaffolding. We needed to get complete access to the sculpture from a ladder, being careful not to put any stress on the sculpture.

The Global Dimension team was Khun Phu and Khun Fluke. They worked very hard doing a great job on a very hot day. Their 3D laser scan is much appreciated by all.

The foot had quite a lot of detail, so it was a good example to show the capability of the scanner.
